Oni Press Takes a Deluxe Edition of ‘Afterlife With Archie’ To Kickstarter
Afterlife With Archie is likely one of the most significant comics published by Archie Comics in the last 30 years. The tongue-in-cheek horror book found critical and fan acclaim, and helped prove that Archie Comics was more than a one-trick pony. Now, an oversized, hardcover edition is coming to Kickstarter thanks to Archie’s new publishing partnership with Oni Press.
Oni is no stranger to this kind of arrangement, having recently made over $1.75 million on a crowdfunding campaign for Murder Drones: The Official Graphic Novel, which they’re also currently selling in periodical format in the direct market. The hope, no doubt, is that Afterlife With Archie will have similar success.
In Afterlife With Archie, a zombie outbreak rages through Riverdale, accidentally caused by Sabrina the Witch and her friend Jughead after the latter’s dog is killed and they try to revive it. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who wrote the series as well as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, went on to serve as Archie’s chief creative officer as well as executive producing Riverdale and Netflix’s adaptation of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He is currently at work on a Disney+/Hulu adaptation of Afterlife With Archie.
Similar to DC’s Absolute Edition books or the Artist’s Edition hardcovers offered by IDW, Skybound, and Graphitti Designs, Archie and Oni’s Mausoleum Edition will be a hardcover comic presented in 11”x17” trade size — the standard size for a page of original comics art. It presents Francesco Francavilla’s art in black and white, essentially capturing the spirit of holding his pages in your hand.
Backers can also sign up to get a smaller-but-still-deluxe hardcover, which is a prestige presentation of the comic as it appeared in print. Some tiers of the Kickstarter campaign also allow fans to get t-shirts, prints, a glow-in-the-dark variant of Afterlife With Archie #1, and more.
