SDCC 2026: DC's Latest Lanterns Trailer Brings the Tights and Flights

Lanterns, the forthcoming DC Universe TV series from HBO, dropped its latest trailer this weekend at Comic Con International in San Diego. And while the first teaser showed virtually no superheroics, focusing on the buddy-cop element of the series, the latest look goes full sci-fi more than once.

Starring Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Aaron Pierre (Krypton), Lanterns centers on a murder investigation by space cops Hal Jordan and John Stewart — but one with cosmic ramifications, as implied by Hal’s assumption in the trailer that the victims may be aliens.

The trailer also gives a first look at Ulrich Thomsen (The World is Not Enough) as Sinestro, and a version of Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) who is far more serious than he was in Superman and Peacemaker.

You can see it yourself below.

With green light constructs, Hal in costume, and a look at Sinestro’s prison cell, this take on the Green Lantern mythology is much more what fans might have expected back when they groused about the original teaser trailer featuring so little green.

The series also stars Laura Linney (The Truman Show), Kelly Macdonald (Brave), Garret Dillahunt (Deadwood), Poorna Jagannathan (Turtles All the Way Down), Nicole Ari Parker (Boogie Nights), J. Alphonse Nicholson (They Cloned Tyrone), Sherman Augustus (Stranger Things), and Jason Ritter (Arrow).

Here’s the official synopsis for Lanterns, per HBO:

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The LANTERNS pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from “Green Lantern.”

Lanterns premieres on August 16.
